ACI simulator fabric discovery

The APIC discovers new switches that are directly connected to any switch it currently manages. Each APIC instance in the cluster first discovers only the leaf switch to which it is directly connected. When I log in to the dashboard after the initial configuration I see only one controller in the cluster:

Cisco ACI simulator upgrade (installation)

I decided to update the ACI simulator, because we received it in the version 1.0(3f) which is the version more than one year old. On the Cisco site I could not find a procedure for ACI simulator upgrade there is only one section about this in the ACI Simulator Installation Guide.

From the Cisco site I downloaded the newest and greatest version of ACI simulator – 1.2(2h). After a 2 hour break (time that I waited to download the ISO image) I logged in to CIMC (Cisco Integrated Management Console):

New tool in the lab!

Today I am welcoming a new box in the company lab – ACI simulator!

ACI simulator provides fully-featured APIC controller software, along with a simulated fabric infrastructure of leaf switches and spine switches in one physical UCS C-series server. More information can ve found in the datasheet.

Here is how the simulated topology looks like:

Also more information can be found in the ACI simulator installation guide.

Cisco Catalyst 3850 basic configuration for wireless

In the following posts I will try to document what I am learning about the Cisco Catalyst 3850 switch, mostly related to the wireless part of the switch configuration. Maybe some posts will be helpful to someone…

Topology:

3850-lab

The topology is very simple. Two Catalyst 3850 switches in a stack connected to a internal network. And two Cisco 3600 access points connected to the stack.

WLAN Express Setup

From the AirOS code release 7.6.120.0 you can perform the initial WLC configuration using an easy GUI wizard called WLAN Express Setup.

The WLAN Express Setup is composed from these steps:

  1. Power on your new shiny WLC 2500.
  2. Connect your PC using an Ethernet cable to Port 2 of the WLC
  3. The WLC is running an internal DHCP server and you receive an IP address from the range 192.168.1.0/24, in my case 192.168.1.2

Upgrading WLC software using CLI

I am trying to make more WLC configuration using CLI. This is the first topic that I want to cover and maybe in future more will come. Now to the steps…

  1. Verify the current software version using the command #show sysinfo

Wireless AP configuration – the beginning…

For some time I have a Cisco 1250 wireless access point in my work lab. I have no big experience with the wireless access point configuration and  there were no time to play with it till today.

The Cisco 1250 is a 802.11n dual-band rugged indoor access point. When you decide to buy this type of access point then you need to be aware that it requires a power injector to deliver power using the PoE from the switch or when you dont want to use a power injector then you can use a power supply.

[old] TSHOOT IPv6 configuration

This is a blog post migrated from my testing blog

Tomorrov I will go for my CCNP – I scheduled the last exam from the CCNP track – TSHOOT. During my studies for this exam I configured the TSHOOT topology in my lab. And below is my IPv6 configuration for TSHOOT. It is simple but maybe for someone it would be helpful.

[old] Cisco documentation in EPUB format

This is a blog post migrated from my testing blog

Yesterday I found out from the Etherealmind blog that some documentation on the Cisco site is now available also in *epub format. For example check the “Cisco Nexus 7000 Series NX-OS Layer 2 Switching Configuration Guide”. Below is a screenshot how it is looking…

If you also want to take a look only search on the Cisco website for EPUB. For me it is awesome. Now I can read some documentation also in bus on my Amazon Kindle Cool
